Early spring or late fall, dig your hole much deeper and wider than needed to remove all rocks and the possibility of clay. Plant with an amended soil, after watering deeply and then making a dome in the hole to set the root ball onto. Then plant to where you you just barely have a basin to catch water and water with a root stimulator mix.

Julie You get the Good Gardener Effort Award!!! It is always fun to try new things, but they don't always turn out the way that you want/expect!! Pinus pinea is the Italian Stone Pine Tree. It is native to Southern Europe and Turkey. That means that it does NOT grow where there is snow!!! Extra heavy frost may be a problem!! I don't know where you live. If you decide to plant a sapling, here are some other things that you should know. These trees grow moderately quickly to 40 to 80 feet HIGH and 40 to 60 feet WIDE!!!!!!!!! Make sure that you have room in your garden for this Giant!! This is the pine that makes "pine nuts". Good Luck!!
