People get pills and other forms of narcotics to cope with there lives for depression or being over stimulated or what ever the reason is. Pot can be a mood enhancer, pain killer, stress releiver, and enables an increase in appetite for those who have no appetite. I have always wondered why marijuana is illegal.

About 70-80 years ago the Dupont company invented nylon rope. Their primary competition was hemp rope. Considering Dupont created most of the gunpowder and explosives for the US military, they had the power to squeeze the government to ban hemp and all cannabis growing.

The number one hurdle to getting it legalized on a federal level is that as an organic, leafy product, the THC levels are impossible to control on the level they feel drugs should be able to be controlled with.

There's no real way to buy one bud of ganj and guarantee 100 milligrams of THC. Plus there's more active ingredients than just THC. So pot is really a mixture of drugs.

As more and more states legalize it for medical purposes and decriminalize minor possession, more pressure is put on the feds to back down. Maybe if we can get a Democratic president along with our new Democratic Congress, we can get at least minor amounts decriminalized, as a starter.

All of the above answers are wrong.

You can find a good list of references on the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm

Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons. The first was because "All Mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy." The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana.

You can find other historical references on the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/history.htm You can find the full transcripts of the hearings for the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/taxact/taxact.htm

The idea expressed above that it was a conspiracy between DuPont, Hearst, and Anslinger is wrong. This idea was advanced by Jack Herer in The Emperor Wears No Clothes. While Jack did an excellent job in assembling interesting historical information, there is no evidence that there was a conspiracy. In fact, there are lots of reasons that a conspiracy would be unlikely. You can read a discussion of the conspiracy at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/library/hemp_conspiracy.htm

You can find the full text of most of the major government commission reports on the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer under Major Studies of Drugs and Drug Policy.

It all comes down to money.

If Marijuana were legal we wouldn't need pharmaceuticals, which is bad news for those money-hungry pharmaceutical companies that the Neo-con FASCISTS favour so much over the decent, strong-willed working-class that built this great nation.

Thus, it is made illegal in order support the FASCIST right-wing agenda that cares nothing for the poor because the rich are easier to manipulate with the promise of more undeserved money.

If Marijuana were legalized again too many Americans will be released from their pharmaceutical-induced brain-washing & see the Politicians for the Neo-con FASCISTS they really are.

As a result, we will begin to realize how much **** we've been fed all these years & demand compensation.

Since the Neo-con TYRANTS are only interested in the benefit of thier stolen money, they will be forced to admit to thier FAILURES as leaders of the Free World & give the working-class some long-delayed recognition.

Since they are too self-absorbed in thier own personal agendas, none of them has balls enough to handle the immenent revolution.

So they try to suppress it for as long as they can in order to keep the rational citizens from taking back the country they have been denied ever since that ******** Regan was allowed into office.

Because it is an uncontrollable substance. A few years back when there was a huge rush to get it legalized the government found that one of the problems with pot being legalized is it will be hard to tax. If pot were legal, I'd grow my own personally. For Christ sakes look what they do to tobacco to make it more appealing to people. Imagine the possibilities they will find with marijuana.

The main reason it is illegal is because it is easy to grow, and cultivate. The government can not control the revenues it brings in,so one way of them getting their share of the pot(no pund intended),is to criminalize it,raid the people who pocess, sell and grow it,and take the money that they made, thus you have some one else do the dirty work and still get paid, and feed us a bunch of crap about a war on drugs. It makes good business sense for the cycle to continue,we as a people find it hard to except that weed can be prescribed for some, but made illegal for others.

Nobody has ever died of not paying their taxes either. You're making a mistaken assumption that laws are all passed to protect us from death. This is not so (obviously), and if pot is a good thing because it's natural (God made it), then try smoking some poison oak and see what happens.

because those in power would have hard time making any money of something anyone can grow for themselves if they were to legalize it.

That said were i live they have de-criminalized the smoking of marijuana and possesion under *an amount i don't remember*. So although it's only in certain places around the world thusfar; i think them allowing adults to make this decision for themselves in these places; will make it easier for others to follow.

Personnaly i would rather they had taken it out of the hands of criminals by not limiting it and allowing anyone to grow it, but i can hope they wise up in the future.

Simple, the street sale of pot is not regulated for quality and available to anyone with cash. Prescription drugs are available only at a trained doctors request and are highly regulated. Prescription drugs are only given to those with a need for the drug, this is untrue with street sale of pot.

Its all about the "mind-set" way back when. Remember "Reefer Madness"? what a joke! The laws were established a long time ago...and change is slow. Remember that alcohol was illegal for a while too!!
