The problem you are having could be many things that are under the bonnet. You need to make sure that the noise is coming from the engine. If so it could be the water pump, tappets or even your big ends. But try looking at your timing belt first. It has a tension arm that take up the tension as the belt stretches. But be warned car now days are made to go back to the mane dealers for repair. It is very difficult to repair cars on the road side. Timing belts have to be changed after doing x amount of mileage. Check with the dealer the life mileage of the belt first. It may be that the belt is a chain. Find out as the car is a v 6. If this car is your pride and joy don’t drive it any more get it to a mechanic.

Bottom ball joints and bushes on the lower wishbones most probably. Notoriously weak spot on Mondeos. Could also be front subframe isolaters, they go soft and the subframe hits the body. Rear mounting on the gearbox has a metallastic bush, and the gearbox can hit the floor if the rubber goes soft. Also, the monolith in the catalyser can become loose, and clatter about in the body of the cat until it breaks up and gets spat out of the exhaust in red-hot pieces.

Might be helpful to know if it's, for instance, apparently related to engine speed or if it seems to be coming from the running gear (wheels, suspension, steering). Might be nothing at all, once I was led a merry dance by what turned out to be a loose number plate!
Perhaps you might want to check there's nothing obvious, like the battery moving around, under the bonnet, exhaust hitting something, wheel trims secure, wheel nuts/studs done up tight.
Try grabbing hold of the wheels at the top and seeing if you can tug them in or out, that migh reveal a defective wheel bearing.
More info might help, if you can.

If its the engine is knocking..ie when the engine is running and the vehicle static, then it is wear on the big end bearings.essentially ,its a very costly repair .
If its only knocking when your travelling then its not the engine so youre in luck.
Could be worn anti roll bar bushes ,ball joints, faluty tyre or loose engine mounting.

It's the blue oval on the front that's the problem. Very common apparently....
But seriously... What type of noise? when? Random/repetative/constant?
From the age of the car, i'd suggest anti-roll bar linkage or track rod end (£30-40 each if you do them yourself)

Knocking could be anything, I suggest you take it to a Ford dealer and ask their opinion and for an estimate.
