it helps to know someone who is already doing it and live in an area where there are lots of people designing games. I game tested Halo 2 becaues they translated it into Italian and I edited it. I basically just came in and played the game 8 hours a day as they were designing it and told them whenever they made a mistake or something didn't make sense. There wasn't always a lot to do so I sometimes helped the full time testers with the multiplayer tests. I don't think they had any specific qualifications, sure some of them had degrees, but some of them surely didn't. The real money was in the design team obviously, but the guy managing the office (a real prick) I think had moved up from a tester position at some point way way back in time. That was in Seattle though, and we develope a lot of games there for Nintendo and Microsoft.

You'd actually fall under Quality Assurance

Basically
1) willing to work any and odd hours, including weekends
2) Repetative work. You may have to playy certain levels over and over and over and over again.
3) good communication skills, because you will have to describe in detail any problems you may find. or how you were able to create that problem
4) willing to be paid close to minium wage
5) at least a high school graduate.
