Well, it could potentially. If you leave an appliance plugged in and turned on all day, there is a chance that a fire could start if you have a broken cord or faulty wiring that allows your outlet to get too hot and spark. however, many of the newer models of curling irons have an automatic thing that shuts off the curling iron if it's left on for too long. I know that mine shuts off after like 30 min.

I've accidentally left mine on for extended periods of time more than once...I even left it on the carpet overnight but nothing happened. Most likely, you're not going to burn your house down unless you put the curling iron right next to a bottle of something flammable (like hairspray or nailpolish remover) and it melts right through to the substance.

im a volunteer firefighter...and theres no guarantee that your house will burn...but curling irons can be as dangerous as space heaters or candles if left unattended. ive been to fires that were started by curling irons, straightners, space heaters, hair dryers...
as for the 'automatic' shut off...that may be true, but that doesnt prevent things around the curling iron from heating up...

some curling irons are really hot, and some are low, so it all kind of depends. it also depends where you left it.

carpet, bad;
cool countertop and no pets around to interfere and knock it down, good.

get home as soon as possible to turn it off, and get yourself in the habit of turning it off AND unplugging it after every use.

Its a possibility.
If its just on and on the counter then its not a great possibility
but if its near clothes or hair spray or a wash cloth or something like that and it gets hot enough it could catch something on fire.
