A friend of mine asked me and I couldnt tell her. I'm 43 and I've heard it used in sentences before, like "stop being so cynical" but I'll be dipped if I can remember what it means. You are not helping a student cheat on a test here. I would really like to know.

I always thought it meant some one who is paranoid and does not trust any one. I just looked it up in my pocket Merriam-Webster Dictionary. It says: cynic: One who attributes all actions to selfish motives.
So in a sense, we are right :)
