Have never been put to sleep in a sleeper, but I have heard that you can pass out from backbreaking holds...ala a straight backbreaker, sharpshooter, boston crab, etc. Anyone ever put someone out or been knocked out from any of these holds? Have felt a whole lot of pain with them, but never been knocked out, and was wondering if anyone has had this experience.

Sorry, I'm new to answers.com. Can I change the catagory? Don't know how it got into Hockey, thought I was putting it into general sports. Thanks for your help!

If by "sleeper holds" you mean something like a Rear Naked Choke, sure. ;) A Rear Naked Choke (called "naked" because it is someone's bare arms against another's bare neck), when properly applied, cuts off the flow of blood to the brain, mainly by putting pressure on the carotid artery that feeds freshly oxygenated blood to the brain. Of course....a lot of "pro wrestlers" do in fact mis-apply the hold for show purposes (because it *is* a show, you know?) because they know the other guy will "sell it" and act like he's passed out anyway--it keeps things safer for them because while anyone *can* do a Rear Naked Choke, resuscitating someone from it once they've passed out is a skill that needs to be trained.

Really. This move is one of the few moves in *any* style of fighting that works exactly as advertised, and *can and will* get people killed if you don't know exactly what you are doing.

As for the "backbreaking" holds, or submissions that crank the neck or spinal column (torso cranks and such).....not so much. Yes, they are painful and if you break the vertebrae you can cripple someone, by directly damaging the spinal cord itself, but....

Whether or not you pass out from those holds depends entirely on your ability to tolerate pain. Some folks end up passing out from the first time their shoulder gets dislocated too. Or from a severely broken jaw. The principle is the same, with some people, if you put them through enough intense pain that is *novel* to them and that they haven't experienced before, they will pass out, but...

It isn't 100% reliable, because some people tolerate pain much better than others, and if this is something people have *done* before, the brain is less likely to overwhelm and shut down.

Hope this helps! :)

Enough pain and you will pass out. As for the sleeper, it is possible. Forget the wrestling move. The sleeper is pretty serious. What happens is pressure is put on the neck artery (can't spell what it is called) and limits blood and oxygen to the brain. You eventually will pass out. When released, you will wake up - unless the pressure was maintained too long.

When I was in high school, an older student did this to me. I was seconds from passing out. So it does work.

If a choke type hold is applied to someone it is possible for you to get them to pass out.

You'll want to place this in to a wrestling category. Probably get better hits.
