He's stronger and in better shape than I am. To the guy that said "gay", ask Mikhail Barishnikov about it. Dancing ballet is incredibly athletic. If you don't believe me, try toe dancing with 3 foot leaps for 3 hours and see if you can do it. My guess is that you probably couldn't do it if your life depended on it.

I think it's cool! I'm a guy and I'm going to start ballet. I have my feminine qualities but that's just me. I think it's beautiful. There are a lot of reasons for males to take ballet... For one, like stated in other answers, athletic stars sometimes take ballet to increase precision and stamina, etc. It's a VERY difficult sport. Try going into a jazz split and then touching your head to your knee (it's very painful, let me tell you - and it's not even fluent yet.). There is a difference between guys and girls in the dance studio. Males hardly ever go "en pointe" (on pointe, and yes it's spelled with an e on the end in ballet - when the dancer raises herself or himself on their tiptoes - it's the most common idea of ballet in America). They also do a lot of lifting of the female characters and are useful in romantic duos. They can create a different feel than the fragile, graceful ballerina. It's because of stupid hollywood that painted the image that ballet is all girls, all pink, all frills, all the time. Fun fact: French was created by and for males in the 1600's. Women were considered too fragile to play the biggest leads... now look where we are. I can't even say I like ballet without being judged.

Hulk Hogan, once danced with Houston Ballet.(Dare you to call him gay to his face for dancing!)..Many actors have danced ballet in their time. Doesn't make them gay. It makes them strong, fit, disciplined, graceful and gives them stage presence. The tights they wear show off their bodies and are attractive to males and females alike, and maybe that's why so much attention is drawn to these incredible athletes. Where else can a guy go, be the only guy in the room, and have a whole room full of usually fit and beautiful scantily clothed females to pick and choose if he wants to. There perhaps are more gay admirers than dancers. It seems to be a big deal in the US to pick out which professions are gay. But ballet is a demanding athletic form of dance that requires years of training, and if they are good at it? Why not? Most men are able to study at local schools on scholarship because there are so few men in class. In the school I studies at, the teachers made a great effort to make roles more romantic and masculine and show strength. Nothing was done even similar to fairy roles or feminine prancing . I say give him respect. He has earned it.

That he's a hell of an athlete.
I've studied ballet for 17 years and I can tell you that all male ballet dancers are NOT gay. Then again, some of them are. But if they're good dancers, they're incredible athletes because ballet is one of the most rigorous dance forms around.

Normally men who have taken the time, effort, and money to learn ballet are the most mature. Most people would think they were gay to dance ballet, but they are actually some of the most fit, musclarly built men. It's very attractive and they treat women with more respect because they are around them all the time.

Extremely fit without being heavy, very athletic, flexible, artistic, sensitive, musical, comfortable with their body. As for those who say they are all gay - unfortunatelly you people don't have enough education, don't have good enough eye to tell the difference who's gay and who's a dancer and who's perhaps both.
Do people ever think "What do ballet dancers think of those who don't dance?" They might as well be thinking "Pitiful, clumsy, fat, self-consious, inhibited individuals who are desperate about their macho appearance".

I think a male in ballet can/is as graceful as a female ballerina in ballet. They can spin & jump higher than a lady can. their characters they portray can be very funny or dramatic as anything else.
Its like having a man chef in the kitchen.

Well I think it takes a lot of courage because you enter into a steretype of being gay. I admire people who will stand out of what society says is "right" and "wrong" and not conform but do what they believe in. I think men who dance ballet are both strong mentally and physically. They might be gay but to admit that in today's world...
