Orsino is the ultimate romantic. He believes himself to be in love with Olivia - a fellow noble woman - who sadly is in mourning. He has proposed to her several times without much success. He's a bit of a drip to be honest. Then, along come Viola and Sebastian -twins - shipwrecked in a foreign land and both believing the other to be dead. Disguised as a man, Viola seeks employment in the court of Orsino and promptly falls in love with him. This is Shakespeare after all. However he uses her to try and gain favour with Olivia. Olivia falls in love with Viola. Viola - stuck between these two loves, her own for Orsino and Olivia's for her is torn. Then Sebastian reappears - meets Olivia - who thinks he's Viola - and falls for her. It all ends happily ever after when the twins are revealed for who they really are, and Orsino declares his love for Viola, actually I can't remember if he does, but he marries her anyway. Orsino is in my opinion not a well fleshed out character. The comic characters are far better written, and Twelfth Night has one of the best Fools ever. Hope this helps. And do read the play, or watch the film - there's a 90's version directed by Trevor Nunn, or go see it. It's one of his funniest, with some lines that remain pertinent even today. Sir Andrew Aguecheek's line 'I do not eat beef' had them roaring in the ailes during the BSE crisis!

at what part in the play? i think it would be most interesting towards the end: because he is torn between his love for Olivia that has been going on for so long, and his new affection for Viola, and is going through some internal anxst since he thinks she is a boy and yet he is still attracted to her. i'm sure you could make a monologue out of that!

Yeah, it is based off it. You can look out for little in-jokes, like the school putting on a play called What You Will, a subtitle of a Shakespeare play, the spider is named after a Shakespearean character, and the school is named after some Shakespearean thing too.

If you think about the line "If music be the food of love play on, give me surfeit of it, that the appetite may sicken and so die," what does that tell you about Orsino?
