My mothers 98 Nissan will not start. Was running fine and parked it. Went out next day and would not crank. It turns over but will not start up. A mechanic has been working on for couple of days. Says it is getting gas, fuel pump is working fine, getting spark (did change spark plugs). He said it was not the timeing belt or the crank shaft (I think that is what he said). He has rulled out everything that would have been minor but is going to have to go deeper. Said it could be a cracked head but he said they way it happened it didn't sound like that. Also could be blown head gasket but everyone I owned that had a blown gasket, I was even able to figure out what happened. Said it is getting pressure in the valves and shouldn't. two of the cylenders(spelled wrong and I think that is what it is called) was not getting enough pressure. Nothing shows up on the computer. My mother is very worried and upset. The guy was very highly recommended and alot of experience.any ideas

First thing if someone tells you a 1998 Nissan Sentra has a timing belt you should stop listening to every word that comes out of their mouth. The 1.6 and the 2.0 both have timing chains. If your timing chain on a 1998 Sentra is bad you should call Nissan Customer Service and talk with a rep.Chances are better that you win the lottery.

Also it is possible to get fire but not enough to ignite the fuel in the cylinder.

Same with gas, how much fuel pressure and is it within specs.

Cracked head/blown head gasket very unlikely given your description of problem.

If this is a 100,000 mile car or so it could be as simple as a new cap and rotor. If that was it then new plug wires are also needed.

if your car is running fine today and you wake up tomorrow and it won't start, you have a much better chance that it is something minor rather than something major.

my boyfriend had somehow similar problem when it had a flood in their place and we have no choice but still go out. According to the mechanic who service the car. We need to change the clutch of the car. I really don't know why or how it happened but the thing is the car won't even start. We just change the starter and the spark plug of the cars. It was explained to my boyfriend since I don't know that much with cars. If you want we can refer you to the same company who fix the car if you want. Just message me for the details.

The valve timing is off. This can be the timing belt, even though the mechanic has checked it. Remove the covers and check the alignment marks for the valve timing.

It sounds to me like he is trying well and has done reasonable tests.

I'd have him keep at it, sometimes stuff is hard to fix.
