Well, there was no metal detectors, at least not in my school. We could wear clothes with logos on them...and yes, Kiss..Metallica..Def Leppard...were all the rage for the metal heads. We even could wear ripped jeans. Piercings were allowed. Colored hair was allowed. Gang colors were allowed. Smoking in the lav was not a major offense either. Neither was carrying pocket knives. Tight rolling was a necessity. Big hair was a necessity. As for a typical day in high school...I'm sure its the same as today only the curriculum was alot easier back then.

I graduated in 1981. I don't think a typical day has changed all that much, if you allow for differences in technology and population.
Inner city schools were starting to have problems with guns. Violence had been a problem a lot longer. I don't recall any schools that had installed metal detecters at the doors by 1981, but it was happening by the end of the 80s. Suburbia was still considered safe from guns and violence at school, but you could get drugs if you wanted them.
There were no cell phones or iPods. CDs started to be popular by the mid-80s, but holdouts like me didn't switch to CDs until the late-80s. In the early 80s, people still used vinyl records. In our cars we listened to cassette tapes or the radio.
Kids defined themselves by the music they enjoyed. There were a lot of leftover bands from the 70s. The 80s saw the emergence of brand new sounds like the Eurythmics. Heavy metal had existed since the 60s, but it was redefined by bands like Metallica in the mid 80s. Bruce Springsteen and Huey Lewis were huge at the beginning of the 80s. You should be able to do a google search for music from the 80s to get a feel for specific song titles.
Only the complete geeks (like me) knew how to use a computer. PCs were prevalent by the end of the 80s but were used only in business in the early 80s. Apple IIs were the school and home computer of choice for those with money. Commodore 64s were much more common at home. Amiga came out in the mid-80s.

There were poofy bangs, perms, hairspray, acid wash jeans, bright colored clothes, and people with ugly braces and glasses. Maybe you should watch an 80s movie.. Footloose, Fast Times at Ridgemont High... and there are tons of other CHEESY 80s movies revolving around high school... oh Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink...the list goes on and on.

LOL omg this is hilarious ..i graduated in 1987....so here goes....the long haired, marlboro smoking , concert t shirt wearing kids were called"burnouts" ...what is considered goth or emo today, we called "squids" except our hair was usually some really bright color and we wore chains in our ears that went to our shoulders, jocks were still jocks...music? hmmm the hair bands..Bon Jovi, Ratt, White Snake, etc or the European pop bands like Flock of Seagulls, Pet Shop Boys, Yaz, Prince was HUUGe after Purple Rain came out.....Fashion...starting in 1984, Girls started dressing like Madonna...lots of bracelets, lace everything(dont forget the gloves), big bows in hair,.lacy, ruffly skirts over leggings...."normal people just wore jeans and sweaters...early 80s our jeans were so tight u had to lay on the bed and zip em w/a coat hanger...got a lil baggier in the mid 80s...also, our shirts were huuuge and baggy...vintage jewelry, huge hair ratted up sooo high, we all had curly perms...no girls wore tennis shoes...we wore flats with our socks bunched down and over our leggings...also, my school was VERY cliquish, just like in the movie "The Breakfast Club" ........hope this helps...oh what a fun decade that was LOL
