Because they can, and because people will continue to pay the price instead of going on strike and letting these oil companies have it in the seat where they keep sticking it to everyone.

That's a very good observation! A friend of mine who works for one of the major oil companies once told me that its the marketing people who are making the money off of the higher gas prices and that even though price of oil goes up and down, it does not significantly affect the operating expenses and profits of the drilling crews and the refineries. They profit roughly about $3 a barrel, give or take 50 cents and some change based on the price of oil at the time.
