I saw my midwife today and told her that I was spotting and she is sending me for a scan tomorrow. Because I'm only 7 weeks she said it probably won't show yet on an ultrasound as it will be too small.

She is probably sending you for a transvaginal ultrasound. They will be able to see an egg sac at 7 weeks and also detect the heartbeat via ultrasound at that time. (I had my first transvaginal ultrasound at 7.5 weeks) To do the scan, they stick a thing that looks like a small microphone in your vagina. Its painless and carries no risks. Don't worry about it.
She probably means that it is too soon in your pregnancy for a regular, abdominal ultrasound.

They have a hand held sonogram piece that they lube up and stick in your vagina looks kinda like a dilldo so dont laugh when you see it. It doesnt hurt, I had to do it to confirm a pregnancy once at 6 weeks and also will get one in 3 weeks to see if my placenta is still covering my cervix at 30 weeks.
