If at all possible remove yourself from the stressful situation. If that's not possible try to put things into proper perspective - remember, do not sweat the small stuff.
To minimize the effects of stress on your body you can try a combination of physical and mental exercises - walking, running, swimming, areobics, massages, yoga, meditation, time-outs for yourself.
Using drugs and/or alcohol is only a short-term solution as it does not address the root cause of the problem, it only numbs the pain for a time.
Solution:
Determine the root cause of the stress.
Analyse how much of a problem it is while taking in the big picture (perspective).
Eliminate or minimize the stress where possible.
Eat healthily, exercise adequately, and sleep well.
Remember answers here are personal and not professional. Hope this answers your question.

I went to a stress management class, and learned a lot of techniques. Here are a few:
1. Deeply breath (breath in deeply, and slowly breath out)
2. Lay down and think about someplace where you would like to be. Imagine being there, and imagine what is happening. This takes your mind off stress.
Other ways of doing it that I didn't learn in a class:
1. Combat your stress. Figure out what is going on, and do something about it.
2. Pray to God (if you believe).

Why not contact Jehovah's Witnesses for your cousin? You may be surprised how comfortable he feels when he realizes that he safe to express his feelings. You can do this by looking in your local phone book under Jehovah's Witnesses or Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Also, don't underestimate the power of prayer. Many people have been praying for comfort and Jehovah's Witnesses have come right away to help, without much explanation except that the person says that he has prayed for help. Don't be intimidated by this option. Just talk to God. He is your heavenly father after all and understands your concern for your cousin. BTW,because this forum is often filled with critics, know that this does not have to be an attempt to convert you or your cousin. Some people paint the picture that we are only out to get people to convert to our religion. We would love to have anyone join us, of course. However, we also know that a large part of our ministry means that we were sent out to " bind up the broken hearted, to preach a release to those taken captive (disillusioned by the conditions today) . . . Isaiah 61:1. Find a way to contact Jehovah's Witnesses in your area. I know that you will be glad that you did.

Meditation. 10-30 mins/day. Stop somewhere, insist on no distractions, either silently or with calm soothing music, close your eyes and just sit. Forget about your problems as much as possible. Try to think of a pleasant place (i.e. a country side, a lake, the beach, etc.) Imagine you're there.
Make doing this a priority.

Three main things:
Meditate, close your eyes and feel that a powerful light is going through your body and release all darkness in it.
Then, try to stay quite, no music, no nothing for some time and try to connect with your heart, just try it´s hard at the beginning
And finally, DON´T JUDGE or PREJUDGE ANYTHING OR ANYONE, that wil free you from a lot of burden.
Think that things will come and go, same with problems and worries, they have a limited shelf life too.

Do not try to self medicate with alcohol and/or drugs as this will then become the primary problem!
Relaxation i.e. deep breathing excercises, relaxing music, going for walk to distract your thoughts. Look at what triggers your stress and remove it or remove yourself from it, even if this can only be for a few minutes at a time.

Honestly, if you can, get rid of the thing that's stressing you. If you can't, I've found that long hot bubble baths and a glass of wine seem to do the trick. I also get great results by spending time laughing with friends and family. That goes a long way.

I suppose it depends on the kind of stress, but for me I like to withdraw alone somewhere and relax. I like to read a book in a restaurant by myself, watch a movie by myself, etc. I also find cooking stress-relieveing. I play the piano, and that is relaxing. I think you have to find something that occupies your mind and changes your gears a bit...gives you an outlet.

Do something that makes you feel happy. Slow it down. Try to gain some perspective. If it seems overwhelming try to brake it down into small steps or goals? Do something or see something that makes you laugh! Laughter is very important! Hugs and a listening ear does wonders! Friends and Family can help too! I hope this helpsl! Best Wishes!
