I heard on the news that they were trying to make it illegal to produce violent video games like Grand theft auto. They say video games is to blame for most of the school shootings. I think that is totally BS. They said they did some type of brain scan for people that play video games and it activates a part of the brain that makes them more likely to become violent. I think its absurd to blame video games for school shootings. What do you think?

I think it is a cop-out, and it is only a way for some parents to pass the responsibility of raising their children to someone else - like the retail stores and video game makers.
Games like Grand Theft Auto (while I am not a fan of them) are CLEARLY marked with a rating. Most retailers will not sell an M-rated game (for mature) to anyone under the age of 17, like the label states.
I worked for Target for a few years, and you would be amazed at how many parents of kids - I am talking 12 and 13 year olds - came into our store and yelled at us because we wouldn't sell their kids the rated M game without them being present. And I highly doubt that most of those very parents even know what is on those games to begin with. All they know is that their kids wants it, and their friends have it, so they have to let their kids have it.
While I DO think that violence in movies and video games desensitizes kids to violent acts, I don't think it causes them to become violent. That is teaching of the parents. If parents discipline their kids, and they teach the kids respect of their elders and of others, then they will not shoot up a school because they are pissed their girlfriend dumped them. They will grow up respecting others and know that taking a life is WRONG.
Do I think that games and music should have some sort of rating? That is still out, for I don't agree with censorship, but I do know that one can't tell now days what is and isn't appropriate for kids. But I DO think that parents need to take a greater role in supervising what their kids are doing, playing and listening to. And I think the parents need to take responsibility for what happens if they allow their kids to listen to violent music and play violent video games and watch violent movies. They need to realize that violence begets violence in the way of desensitizing them of it.
I do think there needs to be a law that if a child commits a violent act under the age of 16, that if it is proven that the parents' contributed to the mental thinking of the minor, they (the parents) should also be punished. THAT is taking ultimate responsibility.

I don't think the video games are to blame. I've played games like Grand Theft Auto and while I find it very entertaining, I don't leave my house thinking that I'm going to pull someone out of their car, beat them, steal the car, then go run people over and kill more people before the cops come after me.. then change clothes in the dressing room and I'm free to roam the streets without having anyone come after me. hehe
It's not reality and the kids playing it know this.. whether they want to blame it on that fact or not, these kids can turn their televisions on and see the same stuff on the news...
I don't think it will ever be illegal to sell violent games..

School shootings are actually down. The video game MRIs that they have done have not actually "proven" anything as yet. We have a video game rating system for this very reason. It's not gonna happen.

I don't think it will ever be illegal to sell violent games. I just think they'll do a better job at enforcing the ratings system.
Violent games don't kill people, people kill people.

the movement to ban violent games, movies, comics has existed for years. it doesn't get very far when family values republicans are in the white house. so you needn't worry for at least another 2 years.

I hope so, then I can market illegal games with every bag of cocaine I sell to school kids. I smell a fortune coming my way.

No.
And all they've concluded is that violent games and violent behaviors are linked, not that games cause violent behaviors.
I find it far, far more likely that people who are prone to violence are attracted to violent games.

that is absurd i don't know why people would say something like that. that is like saying death metal music is the cause of suicides(and whatever else they decide to pin on them) in youth. there is no actual proof.
