I am updating the question since there seems to be some misunderstandings:
I had a trojan called W32/Tilebot-HX and I got rid of it using avast but it left behind a program vcmon.exe which is there on task manager but cannot be found anywhere on the computer, even in safe mode. It keeps trying to connect to the net but zonealram is stopping it.
vcmon is not to be confused with vSmon which is an important part of zonealarm.
I have looked it up on the net and it is definitely a vicious program but I can't get rid of it. I have scanned in safe mode with avast again and scanned with trend micro, I have disabled system restore and cleaned my registry and run spyware programs.
What else can I do aside from doing a clean install of XP?

Why did you disabled system restore? This is a safeway to undo changes to your PC. Please enable system restore first. Then, you first try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. ( I hope it is feasible after enabling the system restore in your PC...!) You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html The problem will be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
After running the virus scan delete all temprory internet files including off line content and also unwanted files and temp. files. Finally, carryout a defragmentation . Your system will be back to the normal...!

Well I searched the internet and came up with this link

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/vcmon.exe-16585.html

It explains about Tilebot-HX and that it leaves behind it a registry file vcmon.exe.

If you read the article you will have a better understanding about how you came to be infected. Then, at the bottom of the text is a link on how to remove vcmon.exe from your PC Good Luck

I'm no virus expert, sorry, but maybe if you downloaded another anti-virus program and ran it, would it maybe detect the vcmon and remove it? Try AVG, it's free. Good luck!
