i'm a girl from michigan so i know i need warm ones. this question is more about style and approrpriateness. this is what i'll be doing on my trip with my boyfriend.

1. hanging with my hipster friends in brooklyn

2. sightseeing: the met, moma, museum of natural history, central park, etc.

3. broadway show (grey gardens evening performance)

4. new year's eve: early seating prix fixe dinner at a french restaurant, show at tonic, after midnight karaoke

oh yeah...we'll be taking the train there (from detroit) so advice on the best clothes to wear on a 14 hour train ride would be helpful too!

thank you!! :)

1) for a night going out, i would pick a really cute warm hat, but take into consideration that you'll probably want to take it off when you get inside. leave your hair down, and when you get to the bar, throw it up in a messy ponytail. i would wear some jeans with long warm socks underneath and maybe some boots. throw on a peacoat on over whatever cute top you have on underneath, and a warm scarf that ties everything together.

2) for sightseeing, pack thick socks, comfortable flat shoes, comfortable fitting t-shirt, an easy-to-remove-hoodie or sweatshirt, and a warm beanie over your head. you'll be cold when hopping from place to place, but sometimes when you get into a museum and it's crowded, you'll be dying from the heat. i recommend checking in any of your stuff, because you'll be moving around a lot and bumping into people.

3) dress up and bundle up over it! there should be a coat-check here too, so take advantage of it and leave all your cold, wet over-things.

4) i am so into tunics right now. i've found really sexy tunics at Forever 21 or Charlotte Russe for cheap. they're great for any body-type, but make sure you try them on to sit how they fit. some nice-fitting slacks would go great with it, and some sexy strappy shoes.

and as for a 14-hour train ride, just dress comfortably. no time to be vain! don't bother with your hair, and a ponytail will just get annoying when you try to lie on that side of your head. wear layers so you can remove them as you see fit. bring a blanket in case it's cold on the train. slip-on shoes are a must, so you can take them off while sitting and throw them back on fast for a bathroom visit.

i would also pack a diaper bag's worth of individually packed non-messy snacks. hit up cost-co for this!

good luck and have a blast!

I'm a former Manhattan girl, so here is my advice.

Your first priority needs to be comfort because in the city, you are going to do a lot of walking. But, you will stick out like a sore thumb if you walk around in white tennis shoes or Nike's because Manhattan girls love their designer shoes.

My advice for the train and site seeing is a super cute pair of funky designer sneakers (check out the link bellow). For dinner, the show, and partying a cute pair of black ballet flats go with everything and are comfortable. The in style right now for shoes is peak toed platforms with tights. But they are terribly uncomfortable to walk in and your toes freeze even with tights on. So if you really want to wear them, stick to somwhere like the show where you know you will be sitting most of the time and/or taking a cab somewhere.

For the train, think layers. New Yorkers wear a lot of black and neutral so you can't go wrong with a pair of comfy skinny jeans (so long as they are comfortable to sit in), a charcoal gray cashmere tee and a black sweater with sneakers. For clubbing, dinner or show a pretty wrap dress in Sapphire blue.

Have fun!

I tried to pick out all stuff that you can find at your local mall. If you have access to a Bloomingdales or Macy's you'll find a ton more cute sneakers and flats. Last time I was in the city I saw Converse everywhere and you can find those anywhere.
