if you have dell then there is a feature that disables the nic card on your laptop to save energy for longer battery life. to enable go to control panel and look for an icon that says broadcom double click and enable.

Typically the computer must obtain information about you ISP's network and also obtain what is called an IP address. Try restarting your computer since it will poll for this information on start up as well as every so many minutes.

You can also try:

1. Click Start | Run
2. type cmd (press enter)
3. In the black window type:

ipconfig

You should see a listing that states IP address. Most ISP's have an address that starts below 100. Such as 67.134.21.100. If the first part of this number is 169 than you have a problem. If you get a message stating "media disconnected" you may have an issue with the software driver for you laptop's ethernet jack.

It should automatically try to create a connection when plugged in.

Open network Connections in the start menu, right click on Local Area Network And ensure it isnt disabled.

Then open the properties, scroll down to Internet Connnections (TCP/IP) choose properties again and ensure it is set to get IP address and DNS server address automatically.

Also make sure you have the corect driver installed.

One final thing is you may have the wrong type of ethernet cable, possibly a crossover cable is needed though I doubt this the supplied cable should be the correct one.

I think it just is enabled. when I installed my broadband, I didn't have to do anything to activate ethernet.
