I'm going to make a 6 ft. lego structure. Any advice on the type of legos I should use?

I'll have to go with everyone else's opinion on this one, LEGO brand legos are best, and the 2x4 blocks are excellent structure builders. don't go for the bigger ones, while the smaller ones take more to build with, they connect in place much better and like brick wall, resist any hits they take, and if it all tips over, you usually have large lego chunks still intact.
Just be sure to find them discounted, from what I read in the news, Legos are in short supply this season due to company re-structuring.

Use the 6 button blocks. You may be able to get a discount if you order direct from the company. You can also browse a coupon site for a discount. If its for a project let Lego know, promoting their goods is beneficial for the company and might also earn you a nice discount. Mega Blocks are OK but they aren't as tight fitting and fall over easily after you hit a certain height.

There is the young children's version of Legos. They're bigger than the normal sized blocks, so it might be easier to reach your goal.

Name brand LEGOS, definetly. 2x4 blocks are the most useful and sturdy as well. Competitors look the same but they just can't compare in quality.

Well for height and structure I would use duplos and use regular bricks for trim and the outer layer.
