They wait for the "Nikolaus" to bring them sweets. The "Nikolaus" is basically the same as Santa Claus, but in Germany there are two Santa Clauses, one comes on December 6 and brings some sweets and the other one is called the "Weihnachtsmann" (the "Christmas man") and comes on Christmas and brings the big presents :-D
But personally I never in my life believed in any Santa Claus....

Because they were keeping their stockings dry for Christmas eve. In Germany St, Nicholas brings presents to children, not Father Christmas. It's called Claustag and St. Nicholas comes to the children on his Saint's Day - 6th December.

Like Americans and British have stockings, Germans (and the Dutch too) put their shoes out so that der Weihnachtsmann (Santa Claus) can put gifts in their shoes.

because 5th december is Saints Eve day and the custom comes from Holland when children would be given sweet thing in their shoes if they had been good or twigs if they had been naughty.

This is done for the Berry Smoutzen on din Shoezen festival where late that night the Smoutzen ferry comes and changes their shoe strings and oder eaters out for fresh ones.
