I bought the bebe sounds on ebay. Some people have a hard time hearing the heartbeat on this, but we've been consistently able to hear it every time since we were 4 months. Just follow all of the directions, or you get interference. You can rent a doppler, and I assume it would be easier to hear, but I only paid like $9 for my bebe sounds, and we love it.

There are all kinds of stethescopes out there. ROFL the ones I found useful are the ones that cost ALOT! The one I had bought was located at Wal-Mart in the baby isle.

None -- My wife's sister brought a consumer baby monitor over one afternoon and we tried it out. We couldn't find the baby's heart beat.
I wasn't upset that the monitor didn't work, but my wife got VERY upset that she couldn't hear the baby's heart beat. She was worried that there was something wrong with the baby.
She setup an emergency appointment with the OB the next day. She assured us that everything was okay, and she let us hear the heart beat with one of her microphones, but it was an exhausting evening of worry.
Don't put yourself through that. Your doctor should be able to let you hear the baby's heart beat during your visits.
In-between visits my wife and I enjoyed feeling the baby kick (after she was far enough along to feel it) and talking about baby stuff.

Absolutely and it was the greatest thing I did for all 5 of my pregnancies. It also helps daddy feel a part of the whole situation. We as women get to feel all the wonderful things that carrying a baby offers but the dad very seldom does...making him feel a part of it and you hearing the little miracle your carrying is a gift for both of you.

My sister rented a dopplar system for like $25 a month from the local hospital. I've heard this is done all over. It's great 'cause everyone can hear it!

A stethoscope won't work most of the time (especially when the baby is little), you need a Doppler. You can rent them, just search online.
