A village is a human residential settlement commonly found in rural areas. It is usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town or city. Villages have been the normal unit of community living in most areas of the world throughout its history, up until the Industrial revolution and the ongoing process of urbanization. In many U.S. states, a village is a type of municipal government.

A city is an urban area that is differentiated from a town, village, or hamlet by size, population density, importance, or legal status. In most parts of the world, cities are generally substantial and nearly always have an urban core, but in the United States many incorporated areas which have a very modest population, or a suburban or even mostly rural character, are designated as cities. City can also be a synonym for "downtown" or a "city centre".
A city usually consists of residential, industrial and business areas together with administrative functions which may relate to a wider geographical area. A large share of a city's area is primarily taken up by housing, which is then supported by infrastructure such as roads, streets and often public transport routes such as a rapid transit system. Lakes and rivers may be the only undeveloped areas within the city. The study of cities is covered extensively in human geography.

A city, in Britain, is defined generally as a town with a cathedral and has bourgh status. The City of Brighton and Hove does not have a cathedral, but is a city - it was made one for the Millenium.
A village will have a church, and does not have a market, a town hall, a mayor. It should have a clear green belt or open fields surrounding it and does not come under the administration of a town or city.
A hamlet is like a village but is smaller and has a not got a place of worship.
These only apply to Britain.

It depends where can you find these two on the map. There are countries where the difference between city and village is huge. Not only regarding the number of inhabitants. There are villages without electricity in the 21st century or without any possibility of transportation. They are still using donkeys or carts. If it snows, they hardly can go to a hospital. There are countries where there is only a slight difference between the two. I don't know. Here is another problem. People seem to have lost their roots. There is not idyllic anymore. People missed rural.

A hamlet is a settlement without a church (it can have everything else).
A village will have a village hall and church and most probably a school, shop and pub/inn.
A town will have a church, town hall, a market place, school(s), shops and probably doctors and dentists.
A city only needs a cathedral to be a city.
