Technically Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was first published in England as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997. However, in 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was published in the United States.

Its definately 1998. I recieved the book as a prize from a writing competition and the date is on a sticker on the front.
