Technically Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was first published in England as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997. However, in 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was published in the United States.

The book was first published on 26 June 1997 by Bloomsbury in London, and has also been made into a film of the same name. This is also the most popular of the books by far, selling an estimated 17 million copies in the US and almost 70 million worldwide.

Its definately 1998. I recieved the book as a prize from a writing competition and the date is on a sticker on the front.
