B mostly it gave us control of the Mississippi river for congress. Also helped us with our manifestdestiny.

Also a little of d. Jefferson had a Constitutional problem with himself in making the purchase. He could find no authority (and there was not) that granted him the right to do it. So that act by default gave the president a little more power. Though he was not a Federalist it gave the national government more power which is what the federalist were after.
