So long as you have style, who cares about fashion?

Are you talking about fashion or trends?

As for fashion, some people see fashion as an art form. Those same people aren't necessarily the ones who follow the trends. There's more to it than that.

I think that trying to follow trends and keep up with current styles is a waste of time.

HOWEVER, I am a firm believer in dressing to look your best. Styles that flatter your figure, colors that complement you, and fabrics that that flow with the lines of your body can help you to look your best. When you look great, it helps you to feel good about yourself. When you feel better about yourself, it shows in how you act. When you love the clothing you are in, it usually helps put you in a good mood.

Style doesn't have to be sacrificed for comfort, and comfort doesn't have to be sacrificed for style. The key is finding the things that are comfortable to wear, and look good on you. Once you've found the good balance of the two, it's easy to look good and feel great when you get dressed in the mornings.

Why is it important to look your best? Simple. First impressions can be very lasting ones. A person you meet for the first time isn't seeing how smart you are, how caring you are, what a great sense of humor you have, etc... They see the surface. When that surface is a good one, they react to it, just like people will react to a bad appearance, only in the opposite way.
Example:
Someone that goes to a job interview in sweats looks like a slob, so the interviewer thinks this person will not put effort into doing the job correctly. The same person in a suit makes the impression that they are a professionial willing to work, and can be trusted to do the job to the highest standards.

It doesn't make it right, but we do live in a fairly shallow world where many people are judged (and judge others) based on their appearence. So it can be important to know what image you are putting out there to avoid being treated differently than you want to be.

I'm probably one of the people you're talking about because I really enjoy wearing outfits that are "in" at the moment, and I guess the reason it matters so much to me is that I like opening up a magazine and seeing a model wearing the same kind of outfit I have on. I guess it makes me feel cool and sexy, and also sort of youthful (I'm only 26, but I still feel sort of old sometimes...) I certainly don't do every trend, though. Whenever a trend comes along that I know I'm going to look hideous in, like the ruffled miniskirts with Ugg boots last year, I just steer clear and wait for a trend I can fully embrace. Like right now I'm totally into the whole retro 80's throwback thing, because I love the 80's so much and was always hoping they'd come back into fashion at some point. If I didn't feel comfortable in things like skinny jeans and leggings, though, you can be sure I would skip the trend. I guess the point is simple- wear what you like. If you like what's in style, then great, go for it. If what's in style makes you feel stupid and you're much more comfortable in some classic jeans and a sweater, then go for that.

I love fashion and I particularly love couture...although I can't afford very much of it. For me, fashion is a kind of art. Good designers can emit emotions through their work. Color schemes can be exquisite. What's sad though is our obsession with celebrities. It's one thing to admire fashion and another to kill yourself to have it because it's become "normal" to see something like a Louis Vuitton. Most of us can't afford a purse that costs more than a rent or mortgage payment. So it's OK to admire it but crazy to emulate it.

Fashion is a form of self-expression. In every society, you'll find people who embrace fashion and people who don't. The ones who don't usually have something else (like art or music or poetry or ___) as their outlet for expression.

Yeah, I hear you, its a little overrated. My mom was just talking about how she should have saved her leggins and jeans from the 80's because she'd fit in perfectly now. I'm so sick of tights/leggins, boots, long shirts/sweaters, mini skirts, ugh. I'm over fashion. I'm happy in a pair of jeans, a plain t-shirt and a pair of running shoes.

because its a way to show your personality,

i dont follow trends that much, i have my own style.

and when you have on a fashionable outfit, it makes you feel more confident then if you just go out in jeans and a sweatshirt.

Fashion is my major at college. I have to be consumed with fashion.
