This is what I usually write in interview thank you notes:
Dear Mr/Ms (last name),
Thank you very much for meeting with me on (insert day here). I really enjoyed speaking with you and learning more about the (insert position you're interviewing for here). I especially enjoyed your description of (insert something interesting you learned about the company).
Through the interview process I have come to have a better understanding of (insert company here). With my background, I believe this would be an exceptional opportunity. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
(sign your name)
(your name)
*GOOD LUCK! I hope you get the job!

Great question and RRRRRR has got it right. Give them 10 points. The reason you write the note is that you are a person of class. It has not a twit to do with whether or not you are interested in the company or the company is interested in you. It has everything to do with your own self image.
Henibee in another answer comments that she is "not sure when sending thank you's [sic] became a tradition". Here's your answer, Henibee, sweetie: Courtesy and class have always been "in". It's just that a lot of people think that they are too busy and important to carry on with this "tradition". It is the sum total of all these little slights that help make the world a coarser place today.

I'm not sure when sending thank you's became a tradition, but we've done some hiring in my office and as soon as the interview is over, they know if they are interested in that person or not. Has nothing to do with a follow up thank you note.
Sorry, just the way a lot of managers work. Hope you get the job tho.

Thank them for the opportunity to meet with them and for allowing you the chance to discuss your qualifications (and then briefly go over your qualifications again).
Then thank them again for their time and offer your assistance with any further information they may require, and add that you look forward to hearing from them soon.

I would say "Thank You" in a note.
