During both world wars (at least thesecond; I am assuming thefirst, too), the British forces sent overseas (i.e., to France) was called the British Expeditionary Force.
During WWI, the American counterpart was known as the AEF -- American Expeditionary Force.

Yep, British Expeditionary Force, UK miltary oversees, they did the best they could. When I think of the BEF I always think of Dunkirke, how it could have gone, and how it went. I was reading a Life magasine from the time and this women was saying that on the radio there was a broadcast explaining the plight of the BEF and anyone with a boat should do there bit to rescue the army, many went in all sorts of vessels, over 300 000 were saved, the core of the army.

The BEF was the title given to the Army of Great Britain that was sent to France in WWI and Early in WWII. That was because the British army was divided into the Home Army based in Great Britain., The Indian Army based in India and the African Force .
In 1940 the Armies were renamed Home Army, all forces in Northern Europe, Middle Eastern Forces, North Africa, Southern Europe and Palestine, Trans Jordan and Iraq, India Army force that guarded India and Southwest Asia, Far East Force, Southeast Asia and China usually handled by Australia and New Zealand.
This was done because the units were consolalidated due to manpower problems.

In WWI, the BEF was originally the collective name for the armies of the British Empire dispatched to the continent in response to the German agression against Belgium.
