He lives very simply, has nice things, but doesn't appreciate "the finer things", like me. Have any ideas?

It shouldn't matter that he's gay or 40. He's your brother. We don't know him. So go ask him yourself.

I don't know. What should I get my straight sister for Christmas? Not all gay men like the same things. Everyone is an individual regardless of sexual orientation. You know him, we don't. You would have a better idea of what he would like and what his interests are.

Why would his sexual preference matter on what you get him, just get him something nice. Perhaps a gift card, Maybe he likes Starbucks Coffee?
