.only if you want someone to return the favor someday.

It is a funny group that has answered this question. Most people are hypocritical to what they think their values are. Good Christians here are saying no and that they must work for their food. Believe me, I've checked on some of their answers (like the first guy, naoize or something like that). But place actual values on their laps and they freeze. My answer: teach a man to fish. What could you give a homeless guy? Food? That will last him a day. Change? That will last him a bottle of grain alcohol. Give him a job; recommend him at a McDonalds or something. Take him under your wing and help him get back on his feet! It's usually not their fault that they are homeless. It is usually not a choice. Who would want to choose to live like that? Give them opportunity and watch them flower into productive citizens.

How do you know he's homeless?

Just because he's begging in the street doesn't mean he's homeless. Some beggars make a small fortune by dressing up in shabby clothes and begging. Others use it to finance a drug or alcohol habit.

If you're concerned about homeless people then give to a reputable charity that deals with homelessness

Wow! Amazing to know how many people think that being homeless is a result of being lazy. Think about it, people. Would someone truly sleep on the streets because it's easier not to go to work? Geez.
Many of the homeless are mentally ill or have substance abuse problems. Giving money to them will, admittedly, probably be spent on booze or a "fix." Give them a sandwhich and a bottle of clean water.

We are all beggars in the sight of God, so we definitely shouldn't deny giving to those in need because we think we are better than them. However, just giving money to a person might not fill his/her true need. I give regularly to a charitable organization that meeds the needs of poor people, but also I think it's a good idea to give out gift certificates to restaurants, etc. or to put the person in contact with organizations that can help. Also, it depends on your situation -- if you are truly not able to give because you are poor, then you can't. I have a friend who doesn't have much money, but when people ask her for money, she offers her lunch. Sometimes people don't take it. I'm fortunate to live in an area where there are many resources for people in need.

People are homeless for many different reasons. Anyway, to make sure they use money wisely, it's best you buy things for them. Like food, or something to wear. Also lead them to homeless shelters. They could use your hard earned money on drugs or alcohol if you don't pay attention. Let them know that you are trying to help them. And hopefully when they see that you are sincere with treating them nice, they'll maybe want to find a way to get back on their feet.

it's your choice. i do if i've got the money and the time, i'm in the city a lot so get asked for money a lot.

naoize, most of the homeless atleast in the united states are mentally disabled and can't hold a steady job 'cause their crazy + there are really not many good mental institutions anymore so most of them are out on the street.

If I have leftovers after eating at a restaurant, for example, I usually will give it to a homeless person.
If you give them money, chances are they may spend it on alcohol or something that will only hurt them. At least I know they are getting nutrition.

for an interesting take on this question, go to sfgate.com and search for "Jon Carroll" "Untied Way" -- he's a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Every year during the holiday season, he advocates getting a bunch of cash from Aunty Em (ATM, that is), going to an area where people ask for money, and handing each person who asks a $20 until the money is gone.

100% of your donation will be applied to the person's self-identified area of need.

Some may not spend wisely, but have you always spent your money wisely?

Some "may not deserve it" (whatever THAT means), but have you deserved everything you've ever gotten?

I give money to charity, but not usually to people on the street. I have been known, however, to buy lunch for someone asking for money for food. I also carry around a couple of books of McDonald's gift certificates and will hand those out to someone asking for money for food. Not the most healthy food, but a few of those GCs will buy someone lunch or breakfast.

If you can spare it, why the hell not. People might say that this only perpetuates the problem, but that is not true. Lack of affordable housing is the root of homelessness.
Some people also say "panhandlers make so much money and have nice houses." This is also a lie. People just say that to take their guilt away.
There is nothing wrong with helping people in need.
