They forced my neighbor's wage up to $20.00 an hour, but now he works less, because people who make much less like $10.00 an hour (i work at the same company) can do the same job. So now, he has to get welfare checks just to make it because the union has forced his wage to high. Is the union trying to make everyone dependant on the govt.?

steve, the position i am taking is that unions are controlling the economy too much, yes, they need to stay, but restricted with their laws such that they force safety, because we work a very dangerous job

Absolutely they are going too far. I have made that argument over and over. Unions also require their members to contribute to causes they don't support. They always complain and tell their members that their working conditions are worse than they are.
As far as the welfare thing goes, typical Liberal stand, encourage laziness and still get paid, i am not saying your friend is lazy, just that his union wants him to be.

The unions don't have enough control. Unions are the collective voice of the workers. American workers were a lot better off when Unions were strong in the 50s and 60s. By weakening the unions, management has been able to outsource all the good jobs and Americans are stuck.

I am thankful for the union my husband belongs to. He works at a job that is often times very dangerous. The companies he works for try to take shortcuts every day, some of which would put him in physical danger, and they do that to try and save money. His union forces them to provide the right equipment and conform to the safety standards that keep him safe and whole. In particular, I am talking about the steel mills and refractories of Northwest Indiana. Unions are huge in this area, and there are times I am horrified at the shortcuts companies like Amoco will attempt to take to save money with their workers hours, equipment, and safety practices. They grumble when they are forced to comply, but they can grumble away as far as I'm concerned. Unions provide a lot more than a guaranteed wage and because of that my family sleeps better at night. I don't know about your company, but the companies my husband works for do not replace union workers with scabs. If they did the money they would lose from a walkout of all trades would cripple them.

I think it's horrible that your neighbor has had to go on welfare because of the cut in his hours. There should have been some way to guarantee that the workers would both have higher wages AND their normal hours. I know that there are a lot of unions that are ineffective and sometimes corrupt, but someone has to look out for the interests of the workers. If the unions won't, who will?

The argument against unions is essentially an argument against the free market. If businesses can set their own prices, why can't workers do the same thing?
I also find it interesting that the conservative argument here is essentially that Americans are getting paid too much. That's an odd position to take, and I disagree.

Unions are adept at taking your money, promising you gold and giving you sh__! Demand to see your union contract and you will undoubtedly find out that your representative can't even get a copy. Unions are for the weak and timid. Anything a union can do for you, you can do for yourself if you are willing to get your fellow employees together and discuss the issues. List out the problems and list out proposed solutions or what would satisfy your group demands and then negotiate directly with management. Unions use your money to lobby your elected officials instead of helping you.
Tell your neighbor to gather all the employees together and vote the union out. Trust me. Threatened with disbanding or voting out the Union, they will become more responsive.
Unions do have a place. They are supposed to negotiate for benefits and rights and a safe workplace as well as equal treatment for their employees. They are supposed to protect their employees from reduced hours, discrimination, unfair or illegal practices, negotiate and abritrate disputes etc. If you are paying union dues and your union isn't doing its job --get together with other union members. Demand a meeting. Write down your demands and have your union representative present them to the Union without giving up individual names of persons doing the requesting. You have the power if only you'll use it.

Union Bosses no longer represent us rank & file union members.
They couldn't care less about the workers.
Here's what's ironic: the AFL/CIO is now Big Business.
They exploit the workers more than bad employers do.
