Can you believe it? MADD of Canada is apparently spending more than 80% of the money they raise on professional fundraisers? PATHETIC. I can tell you I will not be donating to them in a hurry. It is bad enough we have to put up with telemarketers pestering us for money all the time, but to know that 80% of what we donate will go to these people makes me sick. Can you believe this:
Karen Dunham, the organization's national president, also defended the accounting practices.

"The telemarketer plays an important part in the role of MADD Canada," she said. "When they're asking the donor for money, they're also educating the donor that impaired driving is the country's No. 1 criminal cause of death."

Give me a break. As if anyone doesn't know that impaired driving causes deaths. I don't need a telemarketer to tell me this. Come on MADD...do the right thing.

FYI: MADD raises about $12 million a year. That means they spend only $2.4million on what they stand for and the rest is wasted. Marketing costs are necessary, but this makes no sense at all.

Wizzards...I am not disputing that there is a problem with drunk driving and that it needs to be addressed. The fact that MADD is spending 80% of their money on marketing and only 20% on the problem is what I have a problem with. If I am going to donate my hard earned money to a charity, I want the money to go to the cause, not to a bunch of marketers....

I'm with you. Recently there was a law passed in the States that requires "charities" to disclose how much money actually goes to charity work. Did you know that the saleries of charity workers and execs is included in this as an expense of charity work. So when MADD spends 80% on telemarketing, how much of the remaining 20% do you think they spend on their salaries? They are hauling it in fer sure. My biggest problem with them is that they lobby heavily for stiffer penalties for drunk driving but that doesn't solve the problem. Sitting a person in jail doesn't bring a victim family's loved one back. Not to mention that the fines are crippling as well. I can't help but wonder if they spent the money on innovative ideas to get drunks home (taxi vouchers) or public transportation (that works) or zoning (they always put the good bars so far away from the "residents" - what do you think is going to happen) or education they would make more of an impact. But then again, how is a charity CE) going to buy a mercedes then?

I agree that telemarketing the cause is wrong. However, it seems that too many people don't understand the consequences of drinking and then getting into a car and choosing to use it as a murder weapon. Stand outside a bar on the weekends and see how many intoxicated people assume they can get into a car and drive.

If you had ever lost a loved one to a drunk driver, perhaps you would feel differently.

MADD
Mothers Against Deceptive Directors
Please send me money so we can stop these thieves. I promise to only use 20 percent of the money for administration and the remaining 80 percent will go to fight the deceptive directors of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

I can still remember watching some talk show a couple of years ago where they were trying to raise funds for Lighthouse for the Blind I think, and they admitted then that 90% or thereabout of it went for paying fundraiser CEO salaries of 250 or so thousand a year.

Their cause is good, their practices stink. Another charity marred by malfeasance.
