I am not Indian and I hate it when people say God bless you when I sneeze. I don't need blessed! I am not offended by God. People will blurt out God bless you no matter where they are and with no regard to whether it is appropriate. It's like a reflex. I know a woman who will yell it loudly because she gets too stressed out if she can't say it. Sneezing is part of life; our lives or souls are not in danger if we sneeze. Hand me a tissue if I need one, but keep the blessings to yourself please.

hehe! Well i think it's just a nice thing to do. In my office we say god bless you all the time (we're always sneezing). I know it's subconscious but if you think about it you might could just say "bless you".
But then again, nearly everyone worships a God, even if it's not the same, so those that worship Allah can have allah bless them, and just take it into context.
Now if you said Jesus bless you that might be different...

Saying God Bless dates back to the belief that you sneezed to rid yourself of evil spirits. Maybe it has something to do with that.

Because not everyone believes in God, you should say, "bless you". Don't get mad at them for their beliefs because they are different from yours. Just know that not everyone believes in the same things.

Maybe because they don't believe in God. Some people are just mean when you are being polite. I don't see the need to be rude. Muslim people tell me "Allah Hafiz" and I accept it, I don't feel offended or anything. I'm Christian. But don't let it bug you!

I just say thank you after someone has said God bless you. Terrible to think that someone doesn't want God's blessing isn't it?

Bravejunk, that may not help. If they are Indian they are probably Hindu.
Perhaps they simply don't know the historical concept. It is very British based, the French don't say it.

People take offence because they feel you are refering to your god and not theirs. I think its stupid. We all essentialy worship the same god in different forms and manifestations. They way you posted your question sounds racist though. Maybe you showed the same kind of attitude towards him hence he assumed you were insulting his beliefs.

because not everyone believes in a god... and not just "indian looking people" as you put it.
easier way to deal with it... just say bless you... leave the god bit out, or say geusunteit (sp?).

this question has been answered in several forms already but i realise that most people who dont like it simply do not beleieve in the existence of God , i.e. are either agnostics or atheists
