Complying with attendance is important in the workplace because others depend on you to be there and to be on time. In almost every position someone depends on you to do your job, even if you are just a waitress or a file clerk. If you are a waitress and you don't show up then the floor plan is split between the remaining waitresses which puts a strain on service to the customer. If you are a file clerk and your work doesn't get done one day then the secretary that needs to locate that contract will have to take additional time to find it, putting her duties behind.
It's called being a team player.

You are expected to help out with what the company is trying to accomplish. If you don't show up, you are not being productive. When you call out, managers often have difficulty replacing you, and that reduces production, or can cause someone to work overtime, costing more money without a matching increase in production.
Besides, if you continually break policy, they will replace you.
