Contact the police and have them put a tap on your phone. That way they will have him recorded and as such can charge with with threatening death.

I went through this a couple years ago, it's pretty scary.
I think it's illegal to record a conversation without the persons knowledge, if so, recordings you make will not be admissible in court.
If you don't have caller ID, get it at home and on your cell. Don't pick up any calls that you know are from him, if he calls you from his home or his cell your record of incoming calls can be shown to the poice. Hopefully he's stupid enough to leave a message, that's what my ex did - a bunch of times! I turned the tapes over to the sheriffs office. He eventually ended up in jail for a couple of months on two different occasions.
Don't have conversations with him! First, it encourages him to continue to call you, second, the authorities will take you much less seriously if you continue to have exchanges with him, regardless of what they are.
Don't get discouraged if you don't get a very good response from police on your calls about his violations of your restraining order, keep reporting them every time he contacts you. I reported over a dozen violations before they finally took me seriously, which they finally did when I got notification from Kaiser mental health that he was in the looney bin screaming threats against my life.
Also, contact your local womens shelter or organization, they have resources and can give you lots of help.

You don't have to record it. Call the police and tell them he called and uttered threats on your life. tell them that he was served with a restraining order just before that. As it is a legal document you need to call the police and let them know he has broken the terms...
They will arrest him...Do not take this lightly... he might do something stupid....
protect yourself, there are alot of crazies out there,.Call them right now... even if it is not recorded.. it doesn't matter... he has to stay away from you.....

It doesnt matter if it was a private number, if you call your phone line service provider they will trace the phone call and the number it came from, they wont give you the number but they will then pass it on to the police at your request. I had to do this when I was getting creepy calls once.

a simple little hand held mini recorder works well. it does not matter that he calls you private what matters is that you get his voice on tape threatening you
