Nikki, I am sorry to hear that. I hope your mom got on with her life and knows that it was not her fault.

A pathetic attempt to be young again?

It's when you get to a certain age, the number isn't all that important. You look back at what you have done and what you wanted to do and see time creeping up on you and begin to realize that you just might not be able to do everything you thought you would when you were younger. Its then you begin to decide whats most important and begin to prioritize your goals. You give more thought to: do I really want to invest my precious time and energy into doing that or would I rather spend it some other way.
I think this is mid life crisis.

I think a Mid-life crisis would be not being able to accept the fact that you are getting older and aging and THEN trying to cop with it by flamboyancy and false youthful attitudes.... I haven't reached that point, I'm 42 years old and feel great and vibrant still. I thin about aging, that only makes me want to live a better, more healthy life to preserve my healthiness!

I don't see a lot of it in women. We seem to be able to embrace getting older, but a lot of men I know just lose it! They feel like they have missed out on something and dump the wife, start dating 20 year olds and buy big fancy cars or motorcycles or boats. It's too bad...

It's the time when you realize you have less time left than what you lived already. You start to calculate the number of years to 60, and then tell yourselves that 60 is still young. You also start to do silly things to try to keep up with the younger guys (and girls). Heck, it's terrible.

It's the moment you realize you need to reprioritize your life and do what really matters to you instead of following what society or the people around you are doing. It's a self-examination that hopefully leads to a more spiritually grounded life.

When a person suddenly realises that their life up to this point has been meaningless and decides to change it. Unfortunately this often results in the purchase of an unsuitable wardrobe, sports cars, affairs and the break up of families...

The movie, "10" with Dudley Moore, Julie Andrews and Bo Derek explains it pretty well for me.

My ENTIRE LIFE...is a crisis! My mind believes that I can still be a superman, but my body keeps saying...SCREW YOU! I don't want to sound negative, but you see what you have to look forward to?
