About once a week I clean my house for the most part. I love the way it looks but it doesn't last long. I am bad at "keeping it up" and my boyfriend is no better. We also have pets so I have a TON of hair in my house too to contend with. I get so overwhelmed that some days I just don't even bother with cleaning. How do you people motivate yourself to keep your houses so sparkly clean. I try and it's never enough. I hate cleaning so much that I might even hire a maid but before I do I'd like some input from people who keep their houses clean. How do you do it? I have to force myself to start cleaning. Once I'm cleaning it's not too bad but I get so sick of it that once the place is clean I can't be bothered for awhile and then it falls back into a disaster area again. Please help!

I've found it's a LOT easier to maintain your house once it's clean than to just leave it and then do one big clean up at the end of the week. It also takes a lot less motivation to give the house a quick go around while watching TV than to take a whole afternoon to do everything.

Try bribing yourself with a treat: Set an alarm clock for an hour, and do as much cleaning as you possibly can in that time, and when the clock rings, you get to have a chocolate bar, or a cup of tea or do a crossword puzzle or play a video game for 15 minutes. When that time is up, set the alarm clock for another hour and go again until the house is clean.

It works for me, and I'm pretty lazy.

Find a good association for cleaning, or don't say we're cleaning house today, just put away some things... smaller steps make it easier to keep clean. Also, sharing chores and switching them amongst you two. Like assigning days for each to do dishes, or mop the floor. Daily routine is also something that you should consider. As in... every night mop the kitchen floor, or vacuum in the hallway or smaller places, and once a week do a major vacuuming drill... or twice a week, and then you get to share that chore. Stuff like that... I hope this helps. Either that or hire a maid to do the big stuff. :)
There are people who naturally find pleasure in cleaning-- where do you live? I'll come clean up... I am kidding, of course, don't give any personal info. You have to find out what actually relieves your stress to couple it with the cleaning up. Cleaning up can be a stress reliever, you know. Oh, well... I said enuf!

I kept re editing my answer -- I found a website with soem practical advice, from the Queen of Clean here's the website: http://www.queenofclean.com/ Maybe it will help you organize better.

It called life.

I know how you feel but don't have a solution. I love a clean house so I am always cleaning. Comments have been made about my constant cleaning but if you like a clean house and if you mess up, you will always be cleaning up and I do!

The dust comes in, you use a dish or two, you take a shower...get it? Sad to say but it is truly a viscous cycle that will never end.

Go ahead and hire someone. Wish I could but just don't want anyone else touching all my things, leaving all of their germs. I would probably find myself cleaning up after the person has left.

If you could pick up after yourself and your pets as things are thrown down or however they get where they are, it will be a lot easier to clean up and it will not take as much FORCE to make yourself clean up. If all else fails and you have the money go ahead and hire a maid.

OMG.. My bf and I have the exact same problem!!!

it really is about the follow up.. I try to pick up every night.. the biggest issue for us is our clothes.. more like HIS clothes.. he comes home and leaves them in the floor.. repeat that 7 times and you end up with a disaster!.. if I pick up the rooms stays descent.. but I get lazy too.. and thats when it gets bad.. I HAVE A PLAN OF ACTION.. make a place for everything.. at least temporary.. either do laundy more often or buy preatty compartments where you can keep it out of sight.. Like big baskets have a container for everything.. that way you can just throw it in and your done!.. i'll let you know how it goes!

good luck!

I hired a maid to come in once or twice a week to clean for me. Someone that's self employed will be easy enough to afford. Only $40 - $50 a visit.

I know someone very near and dear to me that is like that. I suggested to them they should maybe get rid of things.. and it really helped them!

Clean out the closets, the drawers, the shelves the table tops, the cupboards.. everything. Part with what you can. Toss old papers, give away unwanted clothes and furniture, and see if a yard sale is possible.

Get organized once you have de-cluttered.

The less stuff you have, the less mess you and your partner and pets are likely to make.... plus it will be easier to clean!

Happy de-cluttering and organizing!

Start off slow. Do one task at a time. For example every night before you go to bed, sweep a room in your house (i advise the dirtiest place first). The next night do another, or do it every other day. Its simple and you wont feel like you're doing a lot. Try doing the same with dusting and mopping.

I love the idea of treating yourself! My problem is clutter and getting rid of that clutter. I alway clean a room by moving that clutter to another room in a box or something! Then the other room is aweful... GRRR...

Keeping on top of it is key. Keep at it!
