It's not something in society that drives someone to hurt/kill themself. It's a psychological or psychiatric thing. An issue there can make relatively minor things seem like the worst things in the world. If someone has a slight imbalance in their levels of seratonin or norapenephrin (for example. I know those aren't the only things that can cause altered behavior), then breaking up with a girlfriend, getting a bad grade on a test or being caught with drugs on campus could be enough to push someone over the edge. I won't get personal, but I have some experience in this area. It's not society's problems, it's the individuals' problems (which many times are not their fault either) that make society's issues look overwhelming.

I don't think it's any different than it was back then. There is still peer pressure, drug addiction, teen pregnancy, smoking, alcohol abuse, bullies, etc... It's all apart of growing up. All the awareness in the world could not prevent a child from making a wrong decision. I have a teenage niece and my sister often doesn't listen to her. Since my younger years were very difficult for me, I can relate to what she is going through now. I tell her she can tell me ANYTHING. We also have an understanding that I will tell her mother what she tells me, because I don't believe in keeping secrets from someone especially your mother. But I will always have her side and I will protect her however I can.
