the same reason to not look at an eclipse. the low ambient light causes your pupils to dialate. this lets in more light. the bright tv then goes straight into your retina and can cause damage.

No reason.

It is a wives tale that the television burns out your retina. That is not true.

Televisions use refracted light and not direct light like laser pointers. Those can detroy your retina.

On the true side, do not sit too close to the screen. That can do damage to the optic nerves. As a matter of fact people who use their computers too long suffer this form of nerve degeneration.

But you have no problem watching television in the dark just like you have no problem going to a movie theatre. The light is not being shot directly at your eyes.

And no, it is not like an eclipse.
