Use your computer an make him a Card, certificate of love or some other paper based personal and unique present. So long as you have some A4 paper this present will not cost you anything. It will also be something that you created for him, and therefore put time and effort into it. It will also be traditional as it is paper.
Go on be creative and have a wonderful 1st anniversary.

Write him a letter:
Tell him all the things that you love about him, what attracted you to him, why you still want to be with him and just generally be loving straight from the heart.
This kind of feelings are worth more than money and gifts.
Happy anniversary!

well the 1st anniversary signifies paper....so why not write him a nice poem about you both and frame it...or get him a season ticket for his fave footy team....anything to do with paper would be a good start....or maybe dig out all them old pics of you and him from when you first met and make a collage out of them...something nice to look back on...or even a BEST HUSBAND certificate..you can get them on publisher and make your own...

You could buy a book, or an address book and pen set. There's also the possibility of getting a copy of a newspaper from the day he was born,

well, as you say the traditional first anniversary present is "paper".
my husband is a lorry driver so I bought him an atlas! sounds silly but he loved it. failing that if you cant think of anything paper orientated, then you can write you own special message on your (paper) card.
dont laugh but the sixth anniversary is iron and I just couldn`t think of anything so i drew a little iron on his card.

You could buy him a book or magazine. If you buy him an anniversary card, technically you could class that as paper.

Why not write down "on paper" how you feel about him? Put the note in his christmas card and seal the envelope with a kiss of your lipstick!
