it would be great if you could see a local physical therapist for a pre-op consult so they can show you things such as an easy leg exercise program for range of motion and strength. the PT will also show you how to use a walker safely on level surfaces and steps. there a couple items that you will find very useful--a bedside commode to use over your toilet to simply raise it a few inches so that you dont have to sit so low and a transfer tub bench which will allow you to sit in the shower rather than stand for a week or so. most folks do experience sweeling--moreso when they go home as they are walking around more....so put 2 pillows between the mattress and boxspring to elevate--rather than simply prop --the leg. lastely, dont be afraid to stroke your leg after surgery--the same pressure you would use to stroke a newborn. this helps desensitize the area....as the days go by you can gently massage --but not for too long--maybe 2-3 minutes just to promote nice circulation.
make sure your doctor recommends home health PT and OT when you go home to your mom's.
most surgeons use a posterior approach to replace the hip. if so in your case, you may be restricted from bending over at the waist, crossing your legs, or rolling your leg in. if your doc is doing the anterior approach, you will not have these restrictions.

pain--pain management has gotten excellent and has really sped up the rehab process. you should hopefully be comfortable--not painfree after surgery--but not miserable.
keep in touch with your MD or his/her PA post surgery and dont be afraid to call them once your home if you have pain issues.
there are many other things you could know...
a pre-op PT visit is a great idea.

Firstly, don't be worried about the procedure and try to stay calm, it will also make those around you be calm and more able to help you before and after the operation, your age, general health condition and any previous drug history is important to know before any type of operation.Generally speaking, you should be in your best possible condition in both medical and psychological view. You should be informed about the period of convalescence and how to manage through it.Hope all goes well for you, good luck.
