Color, cut and clarity are right. The most valuable ones are colorless. A good jeweler will give you a paper on the specific diamonds with a breakdown of all its information and schematic drawings of the stone for identification purposes.
Sometimes stones have been filled with "fillers" to strengthen them and also sometimes colored diamonds have been irradiated to produce their color.
Beware buying: "cognac" "black" "chocolate" or other inferior diamond colors.
Also you can have the stone Lasered for identification purposes and many shops are selling Laser ID'ed stones now.
You should also receive an appraisal of the ring or stone for insurance purposes. It is important to note that usually an insurance company will pay have the value of an appraisal since they know all jewelers inflate the value of appraisals.
Please do yourself a favor and do not buy a diamond on line from places like Ebay or Blue Nile.
Happy Holidays

I know a fantastic place to get information on diamonds - "everything you need to know" before you buy. Check out http://www.bestdiamonds.co.uk
When you do get round ot buying I would also suggest avoiding high street shops where the gross profit margins are typically 100%, yes double what the item actually costs them. You to a trader that deals direct from source and you will get yourself the most exquiste diamonds at closer to half the high street prices.
That's my tip!
Good luck

Like an engagement ring? Well there's Blue Nile, James Allen, Leigh Jay Nacht, the Jewelry Exchange, and of course department stores like Macy*s, Target, JcPenney, and even Sears.

When buying a diamond you need to look at the clarity, color, and the cut. The most expensive ones are the no color, incredibly clear ones. Usually, when you look at a cut, the more fire it has (basically, how much it sparkles) the better the cut. You can google diamond shopping and get a much more in depth explanation.
