A lot of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales were darker than what kids are accustomed to today. Disney has really watered down the fairy tales that they adapt into movies, and every one of them has a nifty "Hollywood ending" where everything turns out fine. I've read the Andersen version of Little Mermaid - quite a different ending on THAT one compared to Disney, that's for sure.

And as dark as Andersen was - compared to Disney, that is - nobody holds a candle to the horrors that were the Grimm's fairy tales. Horrifying! I can't believe that any of them were ever read to kids. ( And maybe they weren't; they could've been intended for strictly an adult audience.)

I love the Andersen story The Little Match Girl as well as The Steadfast Tin Soldier. You should check them out. You might also like the 1952 movie "Hans Christian Andersen" starring Danny Kaye, as it has a ballet performance of The Little Mermaid story in it.

I have most of the feature Disney Movies. Not all I'm sure. I do have "The little Mermaid" Did you know that Walt had a private showing of all his on his lot, half the employess wud go one night and the next nite the other half.....then you were given a card as you left and you expressed your thots and idea about whatever it was that you thot was good and if had enough of a particular thing, he wud change it before releaseing. I think Walt Disney had a lot more to do with the children of the world than he knew. Scotty..tiggerswr@alltel.net

I think there are two version of that Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid. The one I remember watching was the cartoon version, not the one with actual people. I used to watch Anderson's when I was little too, and I absolutely love them. But I think children nowadays are really choosy about entertainment and stuff, and there's a huge chance they wouldn't like it like we did in our childhood years.
