When I was in elementary school a teacher would sometimes play touch football with us during recess. On kickoffs he would play on the receiving team and when someone recovered the ball they would backward lateral it to the teacher and then the teacher would throw a forward pass. One time I recoverd the ball, took a couple steps forward and then lateraled it back to the teacher. When I did that the teacher declared that he couldn't throw it anymore and declared the play dead. Is this a rule in any form of football or was this something he just made up. He was a huge Notre Dame fan, was this some play that Notre Dame did?

No, you can't throw the ball forward on a kickoff. Your teacher was a cheater just like ND.

There are several versions of TOUCH football rules. In at least one of those versions, forward passes are allowed after receiving a kickoff - but there must be no advance of the ball prior to the pass attempt. The point the receiving team gets possession of the ball establishes what is essentially a "line of scrimmage", and the rules for passing are then the same - if the ball crosses that line, there can no longer be a pass.

If you took a couple of steps, you crossed the line, so no more forward pass. However, if you lateraled the ball to the coach, the play should still be alive as a running play, so I don't understand the part declaring the play dead. But there are lots of variations in rules around the country, so maybe in one of those versions it would be.

Hey, he's talking about TOUCH football in elementary school. NFL, College, and High sSchool rules do not apply. Some TOUCH (and Flag - see below) rules do allow passes on kickoffs.

Officially you can't throw a forward pass on the kickoff - hence the word 'kickoff'. However in 'street ball' you can do whatever you want. It's not an official game unless it's sanctioned by a professional organization (NCAA, NFL, FFAA, etc). Therefore your teacher who was probably just playing a kind of 'pick up' or 'street ball' game. If it were the NFL that's a 15yard penalty assessed at the kickoff.
For further proof, consult the NFL Referee rulebook.

I have been pretty aware of football rules in college, high school and pros for the last twenty years and you haven't been able to do a forward passon a kickoff on any level for atleast that long, nor have I ever heard of such a thing. Maybe in Texas, there is a high school division in Texas that plays 7 on 7 I believe. I know they have an unusual rule book.

That doesnt sound like a legal play on a kickoff, the backward laterals are ok but when the ball was passed forward the play should have been ruled dead.

no you're not allowed to throw a forward pass on a kickoff your teacher was cheating but because you guys didn't know the rules he got away with it but in college or pro ball or even high school ball or any type of football that is sanctioned and has rules he wouldn't be able to get away with that and no it has nothing to do with him liking notre dame he's just a cheater point blank

On a kickoff recovery, you can only back lateral the ball. There is no situation were you can forward pass it.

No, only backward lateral is allowed. That was the big controversy in the Bills and Titans playoff game a few years back. It was called the Music City Miracle. It resulted in a Titans TD. In my opinion it was a forward pass and should never been allowed.
Notre Dame fans are all delusional. So it does not surprise me he told you that.

No, a forward pass would advance the ball. They can lateral it to another player, but it is illegal to attempt a forward pass.

We used to be able to do this in a "flag" league I was in back in Okinawa (military duty)....really think that this would really liven the game up a lot....our rule was similar to the "traveling" rule in basketball.......you planted your pivot foot when you caught it and then you could throw a pass....once you picked it up it was time to go!!...........just to keep the game clean....a personal foul moved the ball to the one yard line!!!!...this could really effect the game depending on who committed the foul.....if the "D" got it the "O" team got it on their 1 yard line.......if the "O" committed it the would be backed up all the way back to their opponents 1 yard line!!!
