In traditional practice, the tree stays up until January 6, called Epiphany. That's when the wise men actually made it to Bethlehem. Hence, the 12 days of Christmas. So, that's when people opened gifts - when the gift bringers came. This tradition is still upheld in many parts of Europe. If you're into the real tradition of Christmas, that would be the guideline. If you're like most Americans, after New Years.

Never. I only buy live trees so that I can plant them after I'm done with the Christmas festivities. Why waste a tree?

We buy a live tree the day after Thanksgiving every year. We put it up and decorate it the week-end following Thanksgiving. Then, the day after Christmas, it comes down. By then, it has started to get dry.
