Yes,they should and they should be kicked if they're positive.
I happen to believe in helping the poor but these types of things, welfare recipients who can afford drugs is what turns people of of social programs and I have to say, can't blame them.
Welfare recipients should be actively encouraged to better their situation, taking drug is unacceptable and should be reason to stop giving them money. We shouldn't pay for their addiction.

Most welfare is for the children and the elderly. Adults are required to get a job within a certain amount of time or get cut off. It's been that way for over ten years. Should children be deprived of food, shelter, and clothing because of the mistakes of their parents? Right now the foster care systems of most states are so completely overburdened with children from parents with serious drug problems (mostly meth) that they can't handle any more. You are applying a much to simplistic solution to a very complex problem. I would be all for mandatory drug testing of welfare recipients if they were offered the same treatment options that people who have mandatory drug testing in the workplace. Treatment and rehab is a much more economical way to treat the problem in the long term than treating it as a law enforcement problem. Believe me if you just put these people on the streets with no money it will be a law enforcement problem and you will pay when they rip you off. To the person who made the derogatory comment about alcoholics, alcoholics are people who realize that they have a medical problem and are doing something about it by participating in a program of strict abstinence and making themselves productive members of society. I think you are talking about common drunks.

Wow, not in America. Maybe in some dictatorship.
I realize there is a drug problem here, and many of these people do get welfare. I see this as mental health problems. A big junk of our tax money goes to these people as well (we will not have Christmas this year we are behind in our tax's and bills come first, our fault). But this though sounds good, will never be. It would be so illegal!
One is supposed to be innocent until found guilty, not the other way around.

Bad idea, simply due to the cost.

Better would be to make welfare recipients take those jobs "nobody else will do," except for the illegals.

REMINDER for those of you who do not know: Welfare is due to America's policy against starving CHILDREN.

No, we have the parole department to do that for those who have been caught abusing drugs. How much did you want the Federal Government to be involved in people's personal lives? Are you willing to pay more taxes to run this program?

That is a fantastic idea. We need to be drug tested for our jobs many times, and we are the one's paying their way.

no.

that is a violation of civil liberties unless there is suspicion of drug abuse.

it is similar to saying that all students in public schools should be drug tested.

however, if someone has been convicted on drug abuse charges then maybe their welfare should be withheld.

I think that's a crazy idea. Absolutely not. What makes you think welfare recipients are any more or less drug users than the general community? Shall we test our neighbors for drugs and if they are users, take something away from them?

Only if you include the recipients of CORPORATE welfare in that. The big multinationals get way more money off the Government than the poor, needy and desperate.
