I am buying a new home and wonder what the advantages/disadvantages are to hiring a different lawyer from the one used by the developers.

Always, always retain your own attorney. If nothing else, for the peace of mind that any documents you are not sure of can be checked by someone who has your best interests in mind, not the builders.

He is the builders lawyer not yours,it would not be in your best interest & could be a conflict of interest for the lawyer to repersent both buyer & seller.

Use your own lawyer, The builder's lawyer has the builder's interests in mind, not yours.

An attorney, representing a client (in this case the developer) who is a party in the proceedings, would not take your business since it would put him/her in an unethical "conflict of interest" position.

Find you own. Contact the local bar association for references.
