A 56K Modem gives us the maximum uploading rate of 33.6Kbps but maximum downloading rate is 56 Kbps from an ISP. Why is there so much difference in uploading and downloading rate? Is there some way to increase the uploading speed as well?

most companies focus on the download rates, because, well, there's very rarely times you need to do majority of uploading. Examples are: downloading files, downloading the graphics of a web page, downloading programs, downloading song info in Windows Media when playing that song. Only time you upload is when you put files on a website or send files to someone.

This is not to say there there aren't companies out there that focus on uploading, server companies rely on their upload power for people to download from, it's just that a regular ISP will focus more on download rates then upload.

33.6 is the max upload rate. Specialized digital modems and lines are required in order to send at any faster rate.
