I was just wondering because we were assigned to read all three and I loved them. I have read lots of books, but those are the first books that I have read that correlates with history.
Did you like them?

Read them a long time ago. The Aeneid, by Virgil, was never really finished. Caesar Augustus kept after him to do so because in his thinking it was an important document salutary to the state he was creating. The problem is that I see a contradiction. The myth about Romulus and Remus? They were supposedly raised by a she wolf and founded Rome. Aeneas is said to have founded Rome having escaped the Greeks. They're all general ways using empirical evidence and universal truths to give explanations as to who we are and why are we here. Of course, it didn't really take and have been in disuse for a couple of thousand years. Here: ' The Ulysses Voyage ' By Tim Severin Very interesting. Follows the actual courses of the voyages. Very good scholarship, lotsa great photograph and map back up too.

They are all very enjoyable stories, among the greatest works of literature ever, but please don't mix them up with history.

The Aeneid is Roman mythology, freshly re-minted by Virgil who was actually paid by the emperor to make it as patriotic as possible, the Iliad is a Greek epic poem of the Trojan war, and nobody knows how much of it is true apart from the fact that the Greeks burned Troy down at least once in their history, the Odyssee is more or less the first European novel in verse form.

If you enjoyed those books, you might enjoy reading some the historical novels being written by Stephen Lawhead. I just finished his "Celtic Crusade" novels, which follows a Scottish family that decides to go on one of the Crusades in the 1094AD. Gives a good adventure and an historical view of medieval Europe and the Holy Lands at that time.

I have and I loved them. The Aeneid was my favourite because it blurs the line where myhtology ends and history begins. Except, the ending is really quite sad. Virgil clearly had some HUGE issues with the government of Rome.

I've read the Illiad and the Odyssey. They were both good. I never read the Aeneid... I haven't heard about it.

I also loved reading them. We were assigned to read excerpts from all three in a mythology class I had taken in high school, but I ended up picking them up to read in my own free time.

Yes AND I read them in Latin. I studied Latin at school and part of this involved reading them in their original Latin and translating the whole lot. A lot of hardwork but still very enjoyable.
