Poinsettas' are really a tempermental plant. They cannot handle extreams of any type. Keep away from doorways which harbor an outdoor breeze and heat from heaters, lamps, xmas lights or fireplaces. If your plant came with the foil or plactic gift liner either discard it or punch holes in the bottom to allow for drainage and prevent drowning. Watering should remain constant letting the SURFACE dry to the touch between waterings and fertilize with a 10-10-10 fertilizer monthly. While direct lighting should be avoided, the brighter the location the better. Dont be discouraged if the leaves start to fall off, its part of its normal cycle and they will be replaced with new.

Hi,
Here is a good site: http://www.royalpalmnurseries.com/lc/special-topics/poinsettias.html
Check it out, I learned more than I expected.
As for fertilizer, I just bought a 25# bag of "Plantex" Poinsettia, 17-5-19 water soluble fertilizer.
It's the same kind and strength commercial growers use.
Have Fun!
Hope this helps,
Dave
