What is China's Population?
China has the largest population in the world. The last census taken in China in 2000 had the number of people reaching 1.27 billion people. The population has greatly changed since China's first census taken in 1953 where the populatin was just under 600 million people. Estimates now have the population around 1.32 billion people. This means that one out of every five people in the world are from China. To put this in perspective, the United States and China have about the same total land mass, with China slighly larger than the U.S., but China has about four times as many people. Most of China's people are located in the eastern part of the country. This majority of the population is located in a land area that is about as big as the land area east of the Mississippi River. For students to grasp this concept of population distribution, they will graph the population densities from 1953 to 2000 and the change that has taken place over time on a series of maps.
